SCAM Alert: Telekom Malaysia Bonus Scam

When I opened my email today and checked the spam folder in case of any legit email mistakenly detected as spam, I noticed something that caught my attention. The subject of the email is “TELEKOM MALAYSIA BONUS” with email address “bonus@mail.tut.edu.tw

Really? Telekom Malaysia sending an email from TAIWAN? The sender’s email domain leads to Taiwan University of Technology.

It says I’ve won a huge amount of money – RM270k! In a TM lottery that I’ve never heard of, and how the heck do they know my email? Plus it’s also sponsored by Toyota Malaysia and Tenaga Nasional Berhad… TNB?!

WHOA! That means I can get back thousands of dollars that TNB took from me every month. (Long story, long personal issue with TNB)

It’s obviously a SPAM email trying to SCAM you. But I decided to read it anyway. It sounds believable mind you, despite having loads of spelling mistakes. There are going to be some people who might fall for it. So please, if you get this kind of email, DO NOT BELIEVE IT. Please. So many have fallen victim to scams like this, especially Nigerian scam that we are so well aware of (most of us anyway). This could be one of it.

DO NOT attempt to click any suspicious links or give them any personal details. Here I’d like to share the email to spread some awareness. It’s ridiculous that in the papers, we hear even lawyers, doctors, those supposedly ‘intelligent’ people have fallen victim. I just don’t get how they could easily be scammed again and again…

If it sounds too good to be true, then IT IS! If you’re unsure, at least please google first. After almost fallen victim to a scratch & win scam years ago with a terrifying experience, I’ve since tried my best to spread awareness so others won’t have to go through what I, and many other victims did.

Below is the email I got. It’s just one example out of many spam emails hoping to scam some poor souls. You can’t simply trust anything on the internet these days.
